Can Guinea Pigs Eat Celery

Posted May 24th, 2013 in Can Guinea Pigs Eat...? by WhatCanGuineaPigsEat

What is the answer to Can guinea pigs eat celery? Celery is refreshing, crunchy, and great for dipping, but is it a good choice for guinea pigs ? It is composed of primarily water and a bit of fiber, both things guinea pigs eat normally; but there are some caveats to consider. None of the following information applies if you can get ahold of celery leaves; those are great for guinea pigs. Celery has very long strings attached to it, and those strings could be both hard to digest and a choking hazard.

The answer is yes, guinea pigs can eat celery, mostly. When people consume celery, they usually peel these strings away; but a guinea pig is unable to do this. Cutting celery into very small pieces alleviates this problem, as long as the owner is willing to do it. Another thing to consider is the high water content of celery. Vegetables with a high water content are known to cause gas and diarrhea in some cavies. Guinea pigs eat a diet that is very high in fiber, but they normally consume few watery foods. Celery has a large amount of vitamin K1, which plays an important role in keeping the guinea pig’s skin, coat, and eyes healthy. There are also a large number of trace nutrients in celery. Celery contains small amounts of potassium, beta-carotene, folate, and molybdenum.

It is great for variety in the diet, as long as the pet cavy tolerates it. Celery should be introduced slowly, in order to find out if your cavy tolerates it well. If celery can be fed safely, then one or two weekly feedings are fine. Celery is quite nutrient-dense, so small pieces in a guinea pig’s food should make for a healthy cavy. Some guinea pigs tolerate celery and those that do enjoy it greatly. If your guinea pig can tolerate it, celery would be a great occasional addition to his or her diet.
