Can Guinea Pigs Eat Peppers?

Posted July 1st, 2013 in Can Guinea Pigs Eat...? by WhatCanGuineaPigsEat

What is the answer to Can guinea pigs eat peppers? Guinea pigs can eat green, yellow, orange, and red bell peppers. In fact, bell peppers are some of the best vegetables for guinea pigs to consume. Chili peppers or hot peppers, however, should never be given to your cavy. Bell peppers, particularly the red ones, are very high in vitamin C, which your guinea pig cannot produce naturally. Your guinea pig’s diet therefore must be supplemented with foods that contain vitamin C, like bell peppers. This will help them to fight infections and heal wounds, among other positive bodily functions, while helping to prevent scurvy, which results from a lack of vitamin C.

The answer is yes, for the most part guinea pigs can eat peppers. Green and yellow bell peppers are some of the best vegetables for your cavy so they can be eaten daily, while your pet can eat red and orange bell peppers only two to four times a week. Red and orange bell peppers should be limited because they are high in sugar. You can feed them about 1/8 to 1/4 of a bell pepper at a time. Remember to remove the seeds or pips before giving any bell peppers to your guinea pig. Also, be sure to wash the bell peppers and make sure they were never treated with any chemicals prior to feeding them to your cavy.

Although guinea pigs eat bell peppers, be sure not to give them more than the suggested amount. Because they have a high water content, too much can give your cavy diarrhea. Also, remember that some guinea pigs may not like the taste of bell peppers. Therefore, be sure to note whether or not your guinea pigs eat bell peppers and appear to enjoy them. That way, you can feed them a diverse diet that will keep them both healthy and happy. If your guinea pig likes them, then that diet should include bell peppers.
